The Sixth Season

Picture
Despite the financial state of the club the sixth season of League football dawned with the team sporting their new amber and black kit and their new manager, Angus McKinnon.  Angus was born in Paisley on 8th December and started his career at junior side Petershill before moving south of the border to join Carlisle United.

He went on to have a very distinguished career with Woolwich Arsenal, with whom he remained following their move to Highbury in 1913 to become the club we all know today as Arsenal. Signing in May 1908 he made 211 league appearances and scored four league goals in a Gunners career, including a friendly appearance against Boro just prior to their first season in the Third Division North, that was to last for 15 years and through the First World War, during which he was a driver for the Royal Field Artillery.

His reward for such distinguished club service for the Highbury outfit was a free transfer to Charlton Athletic in the summer of 1922   The Addicks of course were managed by William Rayner and it was Rayner who made him first team coach at Borough following his own appointment the previous summer.

McKinnon's brief from chairman Mr Jack Culshaw, was to add as few players as possible to the playing staff and in this regard eleven of the previous season's younger players were retained namely, William Winter, Jack Moran, Jimmy Barrington, Thomas Helsby, Jimmy Riddell, Arthur Welsby, Tommy Mandy, Bert Humpish, Billy Dickinson and George Yates  The rest of the squad, namely the older heads, had been released.  Centre forward Tom Wilson was signed from Charlton Athletic and the board insisted that there would be no more than three players signed during the season in an effort to ease financial concerns.

During the off season volunteers had re erected half of the Pop Side stand that was wrecked during the severe winter of the previous campaign.  There were bnow two entrances to the Grand Stand.  It had been decided to have a portion of the stand used as a paddock with covering, at a charge of sixpence.
