The Second Season
The Wigan Borough Supporters club set about repairing the playing surface during the summer of 1922 and they paid for a large proportion of the pitch to be returfed. Volunteers also undertook structural alterations and repairs in order that a somewhat new looking team could take to the field when the new season commenced. The chairman, John Heaton who had been reappointed to the post on 8th August 1922, applauded their efforts and promised them a much better campaign this time round.
As was the norm, a few trial games amongst the entire squad (three in total) were organised and all gate money was donated to various charities. The last one saw the 'Reds' taking on the 'Whites' and both teams, packed with Herbert Bamlett's new signings were: Reds - Churnside, Fare, Currie, Pendleton, Whitfield, Williams, Kidd, Mercer, Dennison and Stevenson. Whites - Hunter, Kershaw, Fort, Sedgewick, Bamforth, Yates, MacIntyre, Goodwin, Twiss, Worthington and Harrington. The Reds team which consisted of the bulk of the players who would represent the club throughout the season, won 4-3. (Reds, Dennison 2, Eatock, Stevenson - Whites, Goodwin 2, Harrington).

The vast majority of the previous season's team was not retained and despite most of them being on the open transfer list only six of the players had been fixed up with new clubs. George Brodie signed for Castle Douglas and Joe Bibby moved back North of the border as well to play for Dundee Hibs. John Broster returned to Rochdale, William Hornby signed for Fleetwood, Frank Hodges moved on to Crewe Alexandra and Dickie Carlisle had signed for Morecambe. The club also relocated their offices from Wallgate to Springfield Park in June 1922.

The club directors also revealed that there had been an invitation for the ream to play a few exhibition games on Algeria! The invite was offered by a Mr Sahey, a former resident of Earlestown, who was then the manager of Gallia FC based in that country.

This is Wigan Borough's biggest ever Football League nictory. The Lincoln City goalkeeper, Jack Kendall, was stretchered off the field unconcious after a fierce shot from Harry Dennison rebounded off the upright and struck Kendall on the back of the head, the ball fell to Glover who scored. There were of course no substitutes and the game was a rout. Later it transpired that Kendall's injury was similar to 'the blow had the effect of prohibited rabbit punch in boxing which shakes the vertebral column and results in slight concussion'. He was immediately driven to Wigan Infirmary in a police ambulance. Ironically two former Lincoln City players were in the Wigan Borough team that recorded this historic victory.
