The Ninth Season

Picture
Following on from the previous seasons success Mr Angus McKinnon felt the need for only a few players to be asdded to the squad.  The two most notable signing of the summer were goalkeeper Jimmy Mittell from Rochdale.  Ironically enough his debut for his former club was against Wigan Borough during the previous campaign.  Inside left kingpin Albert Phoenix also arrived at Springfield Park via Exeter City.

From a financial point of view there was a mistake made the previous season in giving three players 'traveling contracts', which the club had never done before and this along with a few necessary overnight journeys brought travelling expeneses.  The club also paid for the funeral of forst team trainer Tom Wood who had sadly passed away in April 1928 and this amounted to over twenty five pounds because although he lives and died in Wigan, First Avenue to be exact, he was buried in London.

Financially it was revealed that the board were anxious to bring more gentlemen onto the board because as things stood just the four directors were putting their hands in their pockets too frequently.  It transpired that Mr John Greenough had been let down when three prominent local business decided against joining the board just prior to the club's latest AGM.  The chairman was quoted as saying that 'perhaps once  a month, or every two months, there might be a shortage of money for players wages, but the item is not a big one if spread among ten directors instead of four".  The club had also turned down two offers for their players following a very successful season last time out, but the directors decided against this, even though their sales would have seen the club become virtually debt free.  Much hinged on the club having a second consecutive successful season which would see the club come out of debt.

A poor season would doubtlessly result in more financial chaos as the support from the public of Wigan, in terms of volunteers for directorship were not forthcoming.  Neither were the regularly required 8,000 plus crowds which the board deemed the minimum to ensure the club's survival.

Albert 'Teddy' Humpish was transferred to Arsenal after this game for an undisclosed fee.  However all the money from the transfer was swallowed up as the club decided to pay the accumulated arrears owed to players.  Furthermore the chairman revealed that the sale was made to enable the situation to be rectified and was at pains to disclose that all the players would now be paid in full and the matter resolved.

He revealed that there was no money left to pay outstanding transfer fees and the average weekly income from games was forty eight pounds whilst the break even figure was one hundred and eight pounds. The support from the public was simply not good enough and he feared the club could not go on muchlonger.

More cost cutting measures were taken as the end of January 1930 came into view.  First team trainer William Hibbert, who had been in the position since January 1928 was dispensed with.  It was a rather ignominious end for a man who had once been capped for England and had a good career with Bury and Newcastle United before signing amateur forms for Borough, playing  a few games for the reserve team in the process.

A season of financial struggle at least had ended on a high note.  The season had been a very poor one for all clubs in the North West and this was the only trophy any club in the region won during that season.  The crowd contained 'numerous Wigan supporters who had made the trip by charabanc and train.  City who were holder of the cup fielded their Central League side and this consisted of, Jones, Corbett, McCloy, Gibbons, Gregory, Bray, Austin, Wrightson, Ridding, SIR MATT BUSBY and Harrison.  Their goalscorers were, Ridding and Bray.  The game went into extra time and it was Bobby Hughes who scored the goal that clinched the trophy.

The trophy was presented to Ernie Cockle by the chairman of the Manchester County Football Association Mr T Walker who stated in his speech that the best team on the day had won. A delighted Cockle was quoted,

"This is the first time we have won it and we hope to win it again".
